We’ve all been convinced to buy something which we’ve later regretted. It’s so easy to give in to a tempting offer!
Chapter 4 begins with Jesus being tempted. But these were not just dodgy 2-for-1 deals. The devil (whom the Bible treats as a very real character, the enemy of God) was out to derail Jesus’ mission before He even really got started.
If the devil had been able to distract Jesus with promises of wealth or power, or get Him to sin like other people, then God’s rescue plan would have been brought to a quick end. But Jesus again showed that he was committed to following His Father’s purposes. He used His understanding of the Old Testament scriptures to refute the devil – even when the devil attempted to turn the tables! (Verse 10)
The Bible says that throughout His life, Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not have sin” (Hebrews 4:15.) As the perfect Son of God, Jesus is able to deal with our sin problem. As someone who experienced temptation like us, He is able to understand the things we struggle with, and help us when we ask Him.
