Have you ever seen someone try to get into a venue without a ticket? If there is security on the door, they’ll get pulled up and told to leave. They can plead their case, but without the right ticket they’re not getting in!
Jesus described a feast in the kingdom of God, meaning the time in the future when those who trust in God will begin to enjoy eternity with Him forever. He described the ‘narrow door’ we have to go through to be there. He used the word narrow to show that there is only one specific way to enter God’s kingdom – through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. One day the opportunity to give our lives to Jesus will be over – God will ‘shut the door’ (verse 25).
Many of Jesus’ Jewish listeners would have assumed that they would be given automatic entry as descendants of Abraham. But they were not willing to come God’s way, which would have meant accepting Jesus and all that He said about Himself (verse 34). Jesus warned them that they would find themselves shut outside.
Many people today assume they will be in heaven, because they go to church, sing in a choir, or were baptised as a baby. But unless we know God as our Father, through trusting in His Son, He will say, “I don’t know you.” (verse 27)
“Make every effort to enter through the narrow door”
